Janet, managing director of Starchild shoes Ltd originally began making shoes for her son, on a machine in her spare room. Her beautiful designs were soon being snapped up by the rich and famous, including Liam Gallagher from Oasis who liked the ones she made for his newborn son so much that he ordered a pair for himself !
What is your background ?
I ahve been an adult shoe designer in London for 20 years, working with the leading designers such as Vivienne Westwood, Helen Storey and Nick Coleman, plus designing shoes for celebrities including Prince, Courtney Love, Betty Boo and Boy George. After having children, I realised that there was a growing demand for beautifully crafted, hand-made, original designs, so thats when Starchild Shoes were born.
How did you get started ?
I started off working by myself in our spare bedroom. But as the business really started to take off, I soon was employing people to help with the increased number of orders. Now we have our own factory in Leicester and things are going from strength to strength. We have customers from all over the world. We get some lovely letters from people who have our shoes - it's wonderful to get that sort of feedback !
